Characterization and Monitoring Overview

Characterization of contaminated sites and monitoring of changes in the site that occur through time, either as the result of contaminant

migration or remedial actions, are time consuming, expensive, and often inexact. Because of the ex-
pense involved in gathering char-
acterization and monitoring data, the amount of data gathered is often not adequate to provide a coherent evaluation of the spatial distribution of the contaminant. The characterization and monitor-
ing subprogram (Video 1.0) seeks to develop methods that are less costly, provide results in "real time", and provide data not pre-
viously available for the more com-
plete characterization of sites.
This is accomplished through the de-
velopment and demonstration of non-invasive (Photo 1.0a) or min-
imally invasive technologies that
