Video B.2 (:45)

The first step in the ID approach was to identify technology needs and data gaps. This (Video B.2) required an interactive relationship with the customers, regulators, and stakeholders.

The ID team then recommended technology and system solutions

that meet the needs and fill the data gaps. The technological solutions entailed the modification of existing technologies/systems in addition to the development of new technologies and systems.

Technology Needs

More than 15% of the community drinking water supplies in the United States are contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons. The major organic contaminants at waste sites at DOE facilities are volatile chlorinated solvents that were used as cleaning and degreasing agents in the nuclear weapons component production process. The Savannah River Site (SRS) was chosen as the location for this ID as the result of having soil and groundwater contami-
