Directional Drilling Overview

Directional drilling (Video 2.0) was developed by the petroleum and utility industries for resource recov-
ery and utility and pipeline installa-
tion. Four directional drilling techno-
logies were evaluated at the Savan-
nah River Site for use in environ-

mental restoration. These tests demonstrated the effectiveness of directionally drilled horizontal wells for air stripping, biore-
mediation, and soil heating techniques (Figure 2.0).

The four technologies that were tested as part of the ID are:

1. Short-Radius Drilling
This technology is a direct adaptation of petroleum in-
dustry methods and materials. Boreholes are deviated by downhole placement of a solid wedge to deflect the drill bit.

2. Modified Petroleum Industry Drilling
This technology uses a standard petroleum industry drilling rig
